MMA Rules: A Change for the Better?
May 6, 2013
After the recent succession of eye pokes, a lot of people looked to point the finger (which was the problem to begin with) toward officials and gloves as the reason for the injuries. Fans and fighters are calling for better refs, different gloves, or even different rules. The rules are one thing that Dana White likes to agree with on being changed, but it does not mean that the other options should not be explored . . .

UFC on FOX Sports 1 1 adds Shogun vs. Sonnen, Faber vs. Alcantara, McDonald vs. Pickett

Wednesday, June 5th, 2013

by Adam Martin

The UFC on FOX Sports 1 1 card officially has its headliner.

The UFC today announced that a light heavyweight fight between Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Chael Sonnen will headline UFC on FOX Sports 1 1, which takes place August 17 at TD Garden Arena in Boston, MA.

Additionally, the promotion announced bantamweight bouts pitting Urijah Faber vs. Yuri Alcantara and Brad Pickett vs. Michael McDonald.

Rua (21-7) was set to fight Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 161 but an injury to Nogueira forced the cancellation of the bout and now he’ll take on Sonnen in what should be a terrific, action-packed fight. The 31-year-old Rua is the former UFC light heavyweight champion and is one of the best fighters to ever play the game on MMA but injuries have taken their toll on him and he’s no longer the same fighter he used to be. However, he’s still always dangerous and that should make for a great fight against Sonnen, who is always aggressive in his matches.

Sonnen (27-13-1) recently lost to UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones via TKO at UFC 159, which was his second-straight loss after losing via TKO to UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC 148. The 36-year-old is an excellent wrestler but perhaps he’s bitten off a bit more he can chew against Rua, who is one of the best strikers in the division. Still, expect Sonnen to bring the fight to Rua and it should be very exciting regardless of the outcome.

Faber (28-6) recently defeated Scott Jorgensen and Ivan Menjivar via submission to bounce back after losing his chance to become the UFC interim bantamweight champion against Renan Barao at UFC 149. The 34-year-old Faber is a very well-rounded fighter and a fight against the ultra-talented Alcantara should be fireworks.

Alcantara (28-4, 1 NC) is 3-1, 1 NC in the UFC including a recent KO win over Iliarde Santos at UFC on FX 8. The 32-year-old is a beast of a fighter and has looked exceptional since dropping down to 135 and he should provide a great opponent for Faber in what could be a bantamweight title eliminator.

Brad Pickett (23-7) is one of the most exciting bantamweights in the UFC and recently defeated Mike Easton in the “Fight of the Night” at UFC on FUEL TV 9. The 34-year-old is an exceptional boxer and has great takedowns making him one of the most dangerous fighters in the entire division but he’ll be going up against a very tough and hungry fighter in McDonald.

McDonald (15-2) is one of the youngest fighters in the entire UFC at age 22 and recently lost to Barao in his bid to become the UFC interim bantamweight champion at UFC on FUEL TV 7. McDonald is known for his vicious knockout power and going up against another stand-up fighter in Pickett, this fight has all the makings of a barnburner.

UFC on FOX Sports 1 1 is shaping up to be one of the most stacked cards of the year and the best thing about it is it’s free.
