More UFC events are just around the corner.
We already knew the UFC was planning on holding its first event on the new FOX Sports 1 channel on August 17 at TD Garden in Boston, MA, and the rumored main event for that card is a light heavyweight bout between Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva. Featherweight prospect Conor McGregor is also expected to make an appearance on that card.
But today FOX revealed two additional events on FOX Sports 1 — one that will take place August 28, and one that will take place September 4. No host city or venue for either event was released today, but expect those detailed to be revealed soon. Both of those events, by the way, take place on Wednesdays, not the usual Saturday.
Possible host cities for these UFC on FOX 1 events include Indianapolis, Charlotte, Detroit, Oakland, and Nashville — basically, any big U.S. city that the UFC has been to before but hasn’t been to in the last few years. It’s also possible the September 4 event will be the rumored UFC in Brasilia card, although it’s also possible the UFC hosts an event in the U.S. and one in Brazil on the same day.
Another thing of note is that the September 4 event will take place right before the debut episode of “The Ultimate Fighter” season 18, the first TUF season yet to feature both men and women coexisting inside the TUF house. The coaches for the show are UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey and No. 1 contender Cat Zingano and this season of TUF is likely to draw record ratings based on their appeal.
The expanded schedule is great news for fans of the UFC who wish to see events on a weekly basis but for many fans it’s going to seem like overkill. We’ll have to wait and see how these Wednesday events work out but they are likely to be a mainstay of the UFC for years to come, so fans better get used to them.
