NEW YORK, N.Y. (November 26, 2008) – VERSUS, the network that celebrates real competition and the exclusive television home of World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC), will air its next live event on Wednesday, December 3, at 8 p.m. ET. The championship bout that will headline the card features Miguel Torres as he defends his WEC Bantamweight title against Manny Tapia. The telecast will originate from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas and is presented in HD and Spanish language SAP where available.
WEC Bantamweight champion Miguel Torres (34-1) got the attention of the MMA world when he captured the title in February with a guillotine choke just 3:59 into the championship bout against Chase Beebe. His place among the elite was solidified in June, in one of the best fights of 2008, when he stopped Yoshiro Maeda at the end of the third round to retain his title. After years of fighting, Torres has earned his place as one of MMA’s best, pound-for-pound fighters, but his reign won’t be complete until he defends his title against Manny Tapia.
Manny Tapia (10-0-1) burst onto the WEC scene with an impressive TKO over Brandon Foxworth, and then followed that victory up with a three round war against veteran Antonio Banuelos that he won via a hard-fought decision. A television favorite due to his aggressive style and knockout power, he has both the heart and the skill in the cage, all he needs now is a belt around his waist; something he hopes to take from Torres on December 3.
The card also features a Bantamweight title fight between Brian Bowles (5-0-0) and Will Ribeiro (8-1-0). Non-title fights include a Bantamweight bout between Joseph Benavidez (8-0) and Danny Martinez (11-2) and a Featherweight fight between Waggney Fabiano (10-1) and Akitoshi Tamura (12-6-2).
The WEC recently announced that, starting in 2009, the organization will focus on four weight classes: welterweight (170 pounds), lightweight (155 pounds), featherweight (145 pounds), and bantamweight (135 pounds). The WEC will no longer actively promote light heavyweight and middleweight fights after the December 3 event. This increased attention to the sport’s lighter divisions makes the WEC the undisputed home of the most exciting lighter weight fighters in mixed martial arts.
