Kelvin Gastelum has a new opponent.
UFC Tonight reported on Tuesday evening’s edition of the show that TUF 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum will fight Brian Melancon at UFC on FOX Sports 1 2, which takes place Aug. 28 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, IN.
Melancon is a late replacement for Paulo Thiago, who was forced to pulled out of the fight with a knee injury earlier this week.
Gastelum (6-0) won “The Ultimate Fighter” season 17 after upsetting Uriah Hall in the finale. The 21-year-old Gastelum is one of the youngest fighters in the UFC and definitely has a bright future in the sport with his combination of wrestling and power punching. This fight against Melancon will mark Gastelum’s first bout at 170 pounds and it will be interesting to see how he handles the weight cut. This is a big fight for him and he needs to win it to convince everyone he’s for real.
Melancon (7-2) made his UFC debut at UFC 162 and defeated Seth Baczynski via KO in the first round. The 31-year-old Melancon missed almost two years and the fight against Baczynski was very surprising, and it’s hard to imagine he can put on such a dominating performance two times out in a row. So against Gastelum look for Melancon to try his best to use his veteran smarts and beat a less experienced fighter, but at the end of the day it might not be enough.
UFC on FOX Sports 1 2 is headlined by a five-round welterweight fight between Carlos Condit and Martin Kampmann and the co-main event is a lightweight fight between Donald Cerrone and Rafael dos Anjos.
