Another lightweight matchup has been added to the upcoming UFC 165 card.
The UFC today announced that Canadian John Makdessi will take on Renee Forte at UFC 165, which is set to take place Sept. 21 at Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
The Makdessi vs. Forte bout will be part of the evening’s preliminary card.
Makdessi (11-2) is a 28-year-old striker from Nova Scotia and has accumulated a 4-2 record inside the Octagon, including a KO of the Year contender in 2011 for his spinning back fist knockout of Kyle Watson at UFC 129. The TriStar representative has a wicked arsenal of leg kicks and punches and he showed them off in a win over Daron Cruickshank at UFC 158. Now riding a two-fight win streak, Makdessi has some momentum going and he’ll need a win over Forte if he wants to keep moving up the lightweight ladder.
Forte (8-2) moved down to lightweight for his last bout and picked up the biggest win of his career, a decision victory over Terry Etim at UFC on FUEL TV 7. The 26-year-old Brazilian is 1-1 overall in the Octagon and if he wants to make a run for the lightweight title he’s going to have to defeat Makdessi in impressive fashion and prove to everyone the fight with Etim wasn’t a fluke but rather what he is capable of.
UFC 165 is headlined by UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson and the co-main event is a matchup between UFC interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao vs. Eddie Wineland.
