John Albert vs. Yaotzin Meza Booked For UFC on FOX 8
by Adam Martin
The UFC today added a bantamweight bout between John Albert and Yaotzin Meza to the upcoming UFC on FOX 8 event, which takes place July 27 at KeyArena in Seattle, WA.
The bout — which is undoubtedly a must-win fight for both men — will serve as one of the evening’s preliminary card fights.
Albert (7-4) is a very talented fighter but he’s been extremely inconsistent in the UFC, as he has a 1-3 overall record in the promotion. The 26-year-old native of Washington is coming off a “Fight of the Night” performance against Scott Jorgensen at UFC on FOX 5, a fight that Albert was winning in until he gassed out and was submitted. Cardio has always been an issue for Albert, but he’s a very talented fighter and the TUF 14 product can beat most bantamweight fighters if he’s on his game. By the way, none of Albert’s 11 career fights have gone to decision, so don’t expect this one to, either.
Meza (19-8) has fought once in the UFC, getting knocked out by Chad Mendes at UFC on FX 6. But Mendes is one of the best featherweight fighters in the world and that fight was up a weight class, and Meza took it on short notice. Basically, expect Meza to have a much better outing against Albert this summer. Meza is a training partner of UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson and has a solid record but he absolutely needs to defeat Albert in order to keep his job with the UFC, or at least have a “Fight of the Night” performance.
UFC on FOX 8 is headlined by UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson vs. John Moraga and the co-main event of the evening is a welterweight bout between Jake Ellenberger and Rory MacDonald. As well, a welterweight bout between Tarec Saffiedine and Robbie Lawler and a women’s bantamweight bout between Miesha Tate and Liz Carmouche prop up the main card.
